ACWA Issues Statement on Salmon Biological Opinion
Sacramento, CA —Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Executive Director Timothy Quinn issued the following statement today on a new biological opinion for salmon issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service. ACWA Statement Regarding Increased SWP Allocations
Sacramento, CA —Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Executive Director Timothy Quinn issued the following statement today on the slight increase in State Water Project allocations announced by the Department of Water Resources. Urban and agricultural customers of the project now stand to receive just 30% of their water supplies this year, up from 20% announced in March.

Low Water Allocations Point to Severe Challenges in 2009
Sacramento, CA —Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Executive Director Timothy Quinn issued the following statement today on the 2009 water supply allocations announced by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the California Department of Water Resources. The Bureau announced that some agricultural contractors stand to receive no water deliveries this year, while municipal contractors can count on receiving a 50% supply. DWR said urban and agricultural customers of the State Water Project stand to receive just 15% of requested supplies, among the lowest forecasts ever. The allocations may be updated based on conditions in the coming weeks.

Latest Snow Survey Ratchets Up Concern

The Sierra snowpack – a critical source of water for much of California – is at just 61% of average for this time of year. With eight weeks left in what is normally the wettest part of the season, a third drought year is increasingly likely.

ACWA Issues Statement on Delta Smelt Biological Opinion
Sacramento, CA — Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Executive Director Timothy Quinn issued the following statement today on a new biological opinion for Delta smelt. U.S. District Court Judge Oliver Wanger ruled in 2007 that the previous opinion was inadequate, and ordered state and federal fish agencies to issue a revised one by today. The opinion, which forms the basis for new operating rules for the State Water Project and federal Central Valley Project, could result in permanent restrictions on water deliveries through the Delta, reducing deliveries by up to 50% in some years. The projects serve more than 25 million Californians and millions of acres of farmland.

Near Record-Low Water Allocation Paints Grim Picture for 2009
Sacramento, CA — Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Executive Director Timothy Quinn issued the following statement today on the initial 2009 water supply allocations announced by the Department of Water Resources. The department has notified State Water Project contractors that they may receive just 15% of requested deliveries next year – the second lowest initial allocation in the project’s history. SWP contractors deliver water to 25 million Californians and more than 750,000 acres of farmland.
